Schools & Education
Austin has several colleges and universities. Here are some of the major schools.
- University of Texas at Austin: This is one of nine major campuses in the University of Texas system. It started in 1833 and today boasts its position as a major employer in the area and a top-rate research facility. It's a major source of science and related degrees but hosts a total of about 100 undergraduate degree programs.
- St. Edward's University: This Catholic university is a liberal arts school that claims a major focus toward ethics. It was founded in the late 1800s, marking it as one of the older colleges in the area.
- Austin Community College: With courses ranging from culinary arts to computer science, this campus offers core curriculum for those who plan to seek a four-year degree or associate's degrees in a variety of subjects. There are seven campuses in Travis and neighboring counties.
- Huston-Tillotson University: Historically, this university has been associated with the United Black Negro College Fund and is affiliated with both the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church. Today, the student body is diverse and offers degrees in humanities, sciences, education and business.
- Concordia University: This school is owned and maintained by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and offers graduate, undergraduate and accelerated degree programs.
