Texas capitol

There are more than three dozen zip codes in the Austin area, making it an area with many distinctive communities and neighborhoods.

Downtown Austin has faced the same harsh realities of many downtown areas. The decline in downtown commerce and the tendency to move to areas less congested has taken its toll. But like many cities, revitalization projects are underway and visitors to the downtown area can certainly see the results. Several attractions along with some expansion and building projects are continuing the trend. Residents and visitors may visit the Austin Convention Center, the Lester E. Palmer Events Center, the Long Center for the Performing Arts or the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art (located at the University).

Sixth Street is at the heart of the city's music culture. The area was once known as Pecan Street, and today plays host to dozens of attractions and events. You'll find music, bars and restaurants along the strip, along with special events - music festivals, film festivals, biker rallies and the notable Pecan Street Festival.

There are many individual neighborhoods in Austin, most with their own distinct identities. Tarrytown, Hyde Park and Travis Heights are among the older communities in town. All three are centrally located and most of the homes are older. Other neighborhoods include Rob Roy, Cicle C, Barton Creek, Crestview and Northwest Hills.
